My Background

To work as a counselor requires deep care and understanding of others’ emotions and experiences. My desire has always been to make a real difference in the lives of others and help people when they struggle the most. Because of this passion and my own life experiences, I decided to change career fields. This was not a hasty decision, but rather a carefully thought-through move that affected every aspect of my life. With the support of my family, I was able to finish schooling and reach my goal of becoming a professional therapist. I never regretted the decision, as this is the most genuine and fulfilling job that I could ever have asked for.

From Germany To The United States

More than twenty years ago I made a major move—I came from Germany over to the United States. Naturally, there were a lot of hurdles to overcome—I had to learn an entirely different language and experience a new culture. It was frightening, and sometimes I felt like I was entering a world that I did not entirely understand.

All these new experiences were alien to me. I was pushed out of my comfort zone to learn to adjust to my new life here, which in turn affected my mental state. I had dealt with depression and anxiety throughout my life. I was usually able to manage emotional ups and downs, but the move to another country exacerbated these issues. I was not comfortable discussing my worries because I felt I just had to deal with them. But in reality, the ever-existing stigma against mental health likely prevented me from seeking professional help. I too well understand the feelings of embarrassment, guilt, or shame that often hinder people from reaching out for help when they truly need it the most.

Maybe that is why I naturally gravitated toward social work and counseling. I knew I wanted to help others avoid feeling depressed, misunderstood, or unworthy. Getting involved in this kind of work helped me find my true calling to work as a professional therapist. Therefore, after working for a couple of years in several different fields, I went back to school to obtain my Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling, and I have been practicing in the helping profession ever since.

Help For A Wide Variety Of Individuals

Because of my background, there are a number of mental health issues that I am intimately familiar with. My specialties include:

Life Transitions. We all go through life changes, from a major move—like I did—to getting a new job to starting a family. It is my goal to help you feel comfortable in your new life role and move through it with grace.

Depression. Depression can feel all-consuming at times, but I know from experience it is very manageable. With some help, you can obtain the tools to live a fulfilled, happy life.

Anxiety. As a high-functioning individual with anxiety, I know very well how easily it can take over your life. But it does not have to be all-consuming, and I can teach you the techniques you need to manage it.

EMDR/Trauma Therapy. Healing from the past is a challenge that many people struggle with. I have also found myself stuck in a cycle of feeling like my past defined who I was. But through approaches such as trauma therapy, EMDR, or Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) I was able to find meaning and heal from the wounds of my past.

Ultimately, I aim to provide aid to you, whatever life situation you may find yourself in.

I am a caring therapist with the mission to meet you at your level. It is very important to me that you feel completely comfortable opening up and that we connect, as that is important in the therapeutic process. I use a very honest and direct approach which many of my clients find refreshing. It is not uncommon for us to share a laugh and joke, especially when I point out the obvious elephant in the room.

It is because of my desire to help people with familiar struggles that I started my private practice. I have found that it is difficult to really address these issues with a large number of clients. It is hard to give the kind of quality care and attention that you deserve when I am stretched too thin. Therefore, I try to limit the number of clients I accept. This way, I know I am providing the type of care that you really need to help you heal.

A Little More About Me

Outside of work, I love to read, watch interesting movies, and be outdoors. I especially enjoy gardening, going for walks, and swimming. When I have the time, I like to cook and bake—when I do not, I enjoy going out to eat with friends and family.

My loved ones are incredibly important to me. The quality time I am able to spend with my family is invaluable. As a wife and mother, I fully understand the importance of quality time spent with loved ones. Life goes by quickly, so I try to enjoy it as much as possible in the here and now. A message I try to pass on to my clients is to make every second worth it; it’s never too late to start.

While I absolutely love my job, I understand that it is important to have a break sometimes or, otherwise, you will become burnt out and stressed. It is a lesson I take with me into my practice and will help you understand as well.

Because of my experiences, I know that you can make it through whatever you are going through—no matter how insurmountable it seems. If you are interested in therapy with me, please call me at 972-677-9210, and I can walk beside you on your healing journey.
